Cogroup countries to bring new resolution on Sri Lanka
The UK has announced that the Cogroup countries will bring a new resolution on Sri Lanka during the upcoming 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
This was announced by Julian Braithwaite, Ambassador and Permanent Representative for the UK Mission Geneva in a statement yesterday.
“ The Core Group on Sri Lanka comprising Canada, Germany, Montenegro, North Macedonia and the United Kingdom will present a further resolution on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka. The resolution will be informed by the recent report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.” He said.
This announcement comes as Tamil political parties, civil society organizations and Tamil diaspora organizations have jointly called for a new resolution to refer Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
A few days ago, more than 60,000 Tamil and Muslim people who took part in the struggle “ From Pottuvil to Polikandy “ in the North and East demanded that Sri Lanka be referred the ICC.
Welcoming the announcement of the new resolution, Parliamentarian and former NPC Chief Minister Justice CV Wigneswaran, said he hoped the international community would realize the failure of the 30/1 resolution.
“Looking forward to reading the text of Core Group’s new resolution. Strongly encouraging that IC recognizes failure of 30/1. Possible only because of unity among all Tamil national parties and global grassroots against another rollover.” Wigneswaran said.
