Jaffna Mayor request to grant responsibility to preserve Hereditary Monuments.

The Mayor of Jaffna, V.Manivannan has put out a request for granting the responsibility to preserve the Hereditary Monuments within the limits of The Jaffna Municipal  Council to the Jaffna Municipal Council.

An important discussion was held among the Mayor and the Archaeological Department regarding the preservation of hereditary Monuments within the limits of the Jaffna Municipal Council.

The Mayor made the request expressing the intention of passing our histories to future generation and we ourselves to preserve our hereditary Monuments within the limits under the purview of the JMC.

The Mayor also requested that if at all a full responsibility is granted, to grant the responsibility to preserve the Monument on a contract basis. The Department has requested to submit a letter regarding the request.

It has been agreed to come into an agreement regarding the preservation of specially the Sangiliyan Maligai, Arch, Sangiliyan Gardens, and Jamuna lake. It was  also decided to exhibit the history the monuments in all three languages. They also made a field visit to the monuments’ locations  and had discussion on actions to taken in future.
