Poison in School well: 26 students in hospital

Some anti- social elements had introduced poison into the drinking water tank of the Elalai Maha Vidyalayam resulting in 26 being admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Hospital sources said they are out of danger.

The Agricultural Minister who was on the spot immediately. He put forward a suspicion that parties interested in creating a drinking water crisis in the North may be behind this.

Officials later found a container of Organophosphate Pesticide in the water tank. Organophosphate is a major component of many widely used insecticides.1 2
