Navarathnasamy started his swim across Palk Straight on 1954 March 25 from near Thondaimanaru Bridge. The 60th anniversary of this historical feat by an Eelam Tamil falls on the 26th March this year.
It is proposed to open the statue of Navarathnasamy at the same spot from where he started his swim on this date commemorating this feat said the Organizing Committee. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the statue was held, presided by Dr. Mayilerumperumal, with Navarathnasamy’s elder son, Ramachandran in attendance.
It is notable that late Navarathnasamy was honoured by queen for his feat. His younger son Late N.Balachchandran was also an accomplished swimmer who can swim with both his hands and his legs tied together with ropes.
