135 Grama Officer divisions out of a total 136 Divisions affected by drought, says the GA

In the context of the Northern Province has been subjected to affectation due to the severe drought prevailing in the country, Mullaitheevu District is encountering several crisis level problems. Because of this, out of 136 Grama Officer Divisions in Mullaitheevu 135 Divisions had been severely affected, said the Government Agent of Mullaitheevu, Mrs. Rupavathy Ketheeswaran.

Because of the prolonging drought, the people resident in the district and animals are facing several crises. Agricultural activities are paralyzed fully. Large scale drinking water shortage also had been experienced due to the drought. Nearly 44 villages in the district are currently subjected to drinking water shortage.

Meanwhile the cattle are affected by water levels in Tanks and lagoons had gone down. Also the Yala cultivation has been affected. The fishermen who are depending on fresh water fishing also has been affected she said.

As the water levels have gone down, we are unable to undertake our livelihood and we are finding it difficult to carry on our day to day life said the affected fishermen.
