4,000 acre cultivation destroyed by floods, in Kilinochchi
Crops cultivated in 4,000 acre were destroyed by the recent floods, the statistics of Kilinochchi District Secretariat revealed.
The deteriorating climatic conditions all over the country had caused heavy rains for two days and the resulting flood waters have invaded into cultivated areas, houses and shops causing much damage.
As per the statistics received so far regarding the loss of paddy cultivations and subsidiary food crops, 2,500 acres of paddy cultivation out of a total 2,790 acre at Akkarayan, all 121 acre of subsidiary crops at Vannerikulam and 500 acre under the Iranaimadu.
In the context of Yala cultivation under Iranaimadu being not done this year, more than 4,000 acre of the crops cultivated under other tanks had been destroyed by the floods.
Although the farmers want to re-plant the crops destroyed by the floods, they are being discouraged by the thought of repetition of floods.
