Struggles in the North on the Independence Day
People’s struggles were undertaken in the North, yesterday, the Independence day of Sri Lanka. These struggles were undertaken in Kilinochchi, Mulaitheevu and Vavuniya, demanding the release of ancestral lands that are under the control of the Army and the release of people who have gone missing.
Vavuniya
Attention drawing demonstration was undertaken by people who are continuously fighting for 346 days demanding the release of their relatives who had gone missing. The participant said that although the OMP was established last year nothing had happened through it. Representatives of affected people should in the Office. We are holding this as a Black day, they said.
Kilinochchi
The people who are engaged in the struggle for their relatives for the last 350 days undertook an attention drawing demonstration wearing black cloths and binding their mouths with black clothes. We have not received any solution and hence we are not in a position Celebrate the Independence Day, they said.
Mulaitheevu
The relatives demonstrated in Mulaitheevu wearing black clothes on the head.
Kepapulavu
People engaged in struggle for 339 days demanding release of their lands held an attention drawing Demonstration yesterday. When they tried go in a procession to the Murugan temple they ran into a dispute with the Police it is said.
The Leader of the protestors , Arumugam Velauthapillai had undertaken a fasting protest on a specially constructed platform at a height of 10’ wearing black clothes and Margosa leaves.181 acre lands belonging to 104 families are still under the control of the Army.
