The Appeal court cancels the summons sent to the President by Jaffna Court

The Appeal has cancelled yesterday the summons sent by Jaffna Magistrate Court to President Gotabhaya Rajapakse, relevant to the case where two Human Rights activists have gone missing.

Two Human Rights activists, Lalith Veeraraj and Kugan Murugananthan had been abducted and made to disappear. This disappearing had occurred after the end of the war and when Jaffna was under the full control of the Army.

A summons was sent in 2019, by the Jaffna Magistrate Court, to the current President, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, relevant to a case filed regarding this going missing.

Although, Gotabhaya Rajapakse was summoned prior to the President’s election, he did not appear in the court citing security reasons. However, he visited Jaffna after the case date for election campaign.

Human Rights activists, Lalith Veeraraj and KuganMurugananthan were made to disappear on 2011.12.09, a day ahead of the World Human Rights Day. Finally, they were seen at Kaithady area.

They were engaged in documenting people going missing during war years and after the end of the war.

Their relatives are continuing to accuse that they were encountering life threats and that they were abducted and made to disappear by the Security Forces.
