Jaffna – Nominations of 15 parties & 6 Independent groups accepted

Out of the 17 parties and 12 independent groups, which submitted their Nominations, the Nominations of 15 parties and 6 independent groups were accepted by the Chief Returning officer, Jaffna District, N.Vethanayagan said. Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi, All Ceylon Tamil Congress, EPDP, UNP, TULF, and UPFA were among the accepted parties and the independent groups included the group of Former Militants. The Nominations of 2 parties and 6 independents groups were rejected by the CRO, N.Vethanayagan.

210 candidates are contesting for 07 seats in the Jaffna Electoral District. 280 candidates are contesting for 06 seats in Vanni Electoral District.16 political parties and 30 independent groups contesting in Batticaloa.Ananthi Sasitharan, expected to contest as an independent failed to submit her nomination.V.Anandasangary, Leader of TULF abandoned the North and contesting in Colombo.

What they said after Nominations:

TNPF- Kajendrakumar Ponnambalam – We contesting to bring an end to Tamil People being swindled and to go forward for our ideals.

TULF – Thambaiah Wicknarasa– We will toil for service to People.

UPFA – Angajan Ramanathan – The advancement of the youth is the change we like. Our hands are clean.

Ind. group 4- N.Vidyatrharan – Former militants have forward with new hopes. Democratic Militants do  not represent  Tigers.

Tension was caused by Thavarasa, Doughlas and relatives of Angajan over telephone conversation of Sumanthiran  over an official Secretariat phone. Thavarasa pulled the  Deputy Returning Officer to the police and shouted to them to arrest the DRO. Rejecting the charges of the EPDP and others, CRO, N.Vethanayagan said, they could complain to the Election Commissioner if they want. Tension prevailed for about 15 minutes.

Following the scuffle, Sumanthiran(IATK) said that the politics of EFDP is coming to an end. As this is the last time they will be facing the elections they have staged a drama here today and gone.
