Law is a means towards and end and that end is Justice : Hon K.Sri Bawan
The Chief Justice Hon.K.Sri Bawan , delivering a landmark speech to a gathering at the 10th Anniversary of the Law Faculty of the University of Jaffna held at the Kailasapathy Hall, yesterday.
He congratulated the people associated with the Law faculty and those continuing to be associated with it for a decade. Some extract of his speech are given below:
- One test for the maturity of the legal profession is its ability to see the purpose behind the law and give effect to the law , not the letter.
- However high you move up the ladder of education, do not allow the roots of our culture dry up in your heart.
- I also believe that education should be imparted with a view to the type of society we wish to build.
- I consider that life is a series of opportunities. whatever opportunities we come across if we throw ourselves at it, and do our best in a spirit of dedication, We will have the blessing of the divine. Greatness is a combination of Ability and opportunity. If one is without the other nothing will happen. It is the combination of Opportunity and ability that gives you a modest amount of success in life.
- I would like to quote a verse I have read long time ago: ” Make yourself strong. so strong that when God make your fate He asks you, ‘Tell me what you want?'” The message here is that we control our own fate. Do what is right.
- I would like to conclude with a quotation of Aristotle: ” Man when perfected is the best of animals. But when separated from Law and Justice, he is the worse of all. Since Armed injustice is the most dangerous, he is armed from his birth and use it intelligently for may be worse ends. Therefore if there is no virtue, he is the most unholy and most savages of the animals on foot.”
