President orders to immediately suspend the Pre-fabricated house project for North
The president ordered the stoppage of the 65,000 housing scheme for the North during the Cabinet meeting yesterday. This controversial housing scheme with prefabricated houses was taken up in the Cabinet Meeting. The order had followed the opposition from several factions to these houses. A decision could be taken after reviewing the scheme, the president had said.
Ministry of resettlement had arranged for the construction of 65,000 pre-fabricated houses for the North at a cost of Rs.2,100,000/= each.
The NPC had adopted a resolution in its last sitting calling for the review of these houses. This resolution had pointed out that these houses are not suitable to the climate of the North, not secure and the cost is excessive.
It is notable that a reputed Architect Upasiri de Silva had commented that 1 million will be robbed from each house.
A special Committee including the President, and Prime Minister had been formed to review this scheme.
The review will be held after the return of the Prime Minister from his visit to China.
