Situation of the Elephant Pass saltern understood because of direct visit: says Siritharan, MP
The reconstruction works of the Eliphant Pass saltern are being undertaken in a slow pace. Sivagnnam Siritharan, MP visited the Elephant Pass saltern which is a Large scale industrial centre of Kilinochchi District, to evaluate the reconstruction works of the saltern disused during the war.
I became aware of the fact that this saltern is still not in a position to get into operation, said the MP.
Although 7 years have passed the saltern is not in a position to operate. The Government is mulling the reconstruction which is currently going on a slow pace. There are ideas and expectations that lot of boys and girls from Jaffna, Kilinochchi Mullaitheevu districts will get employment opportunities.
The saltern which was commissioned prior to 1973 was damaged in war during 1990 was commissioned again in 2044 going into disuse again in 2008. Rs. 80 million had been allocated for the repair now.
Nearly 50,000 MT were produced earlier and it is expected that when the reconstruction is completed around 8,000 MT could be produced in the first stage.651 workers worked here in comparison to the 31 now.
