No information on persons who went missing after surrendering to the Army, Officer ‘summersault’ in court

An Army Officer who formerly said that he is in possession of people surrendered to the Army at the end of the final war, testified yesterday that he is not in possession of any such information.

A member of the LTTE, Nadesu Muraleetharan, his wife Jeyakumary, their 5 year old son Tharusan and 2 year old daughter Abiththa surrendered as a family to the Army as per the call of the Government at the end of the final war and thereafter went missing.

A  habeas Corpus application was filed and the case was taken up for inquiry yesterday at the Mullaitheevu court. A retired Army Officer, Major General Chanakka Goonewardene, testified yesterday that he is not in possession of any details of persons who had been reported missing.

Kanthasamy Ponnammah had filed a habeas Corpus application regarding four persons of the same family going missing after surrendering to the Army at the end of the final war.

When this officer testified in an earlier inquiry in the same court had testified that he is in possession of the particulars of persons surrendered to the Army. But, on court’s orders he submitted only the list of Rehabilitated militants. Objections were raised against accepting this list by plaintiffs’ Attorney, K.S.Ratnavel, who demanded the list of persons surrendered to the Army at the end of the Final war.

Thereupon, the officer denied having any such particulars. The case was postponed to  January 30th .

Ananthy Sasitharan, wife of former incharge of Political wing in Trincomalee, Krishnakumar Jeyakumari, Wisvanathan Palananthiny, Kanthasamy Kanthy and Kanthasamy Ponnammah had filed this case.
