Undergrads Murder – Police dragging the Case? Judge warns the police
The judge inquiring the killing of two undergrads of the Jaffna University reprimanded the police for saying excuses without submitting necessary reports. He also ordered to answer as to who ordered to record the deaths as accident deaths. He also warned that if the SSP, Mulaitheevu does not present himself on the next date, arrest warrant will be issued against him. It is notable that the SSP was called to the court regarding an inquiry he made from the affected factions, in the guise of a departmental inquiry.
This case was taken up for hearing before judge S.Satheestharan and the 5 Police officers who are accused in the case was produced in the court.
CID Officer was present in the court yesterday but he did not submit the reports on CCTV recordings nor the report of the Officer in charge of the armoury regarding the rifles used during the incident.
On 21st October last year, two undergrads of the University of Jaffna who were travelling on a motor cycle were shot at mid night by police officers on duty at the Kulapiddy area during which one student died of gunshot injuries and the other by impact on the wall near the spot. Earlier police tried to make this an accident but later it was proved that it was a deliberating shooting and 5 police officers are charged in the courts for the killing of the two undergraduates.
When the CID submitted that they have requested for counsel of Attorney General, the attorneys who appeared for the affected factions objected to calling Attorney General’s instructions at this stage of the case. The judge also asked the police for calling AG instruction at this point.
