Get into action immediately to save the Palmyrah Resource, Island Sector people request jointly

“The Palmyrah trees in the island sector are felled on a daily basis and if this continues the Palmyra will go into extinction very soon in the Island sector. Even the young Palmyrahs are being destroyed by the cattle. Planning have to be undertaken to safeguard them.” This appeal has been jointly made by the people of the Island sector.

A discussion on developing the Island sector was held at the Conference hall of the Neduntheevu Divisional Secretariat.

The representatives of public Organizations who participated in this meeting have appealed as above.

Housing schemes have been given to people of Island sector and lot of Palmyrahs are being cut down for roofing materials driving the Palmyrah into extinction. People should use alternate materials and necessary grants should be made available with the housing Loans. Although model Palmyrah farms and planting of wild trees are undertaken lack of fences around them made it easy for cattle to go in and damage the trees.

Our attempts at forming a Palm development cooperative society for the Island sector have commenced to bear fruit and we will take action to construct fences and preserve the existing trees, said the Officer from Department of Palmyrah and Coconut Development.

Several people including Divisional Secretary of Neduntheevu, Director of Planning of the District Secretariat, Deputy Director of planning, Assistant Directors of Planningn and officers from Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, participated in this meeting.
