13th Anniversary of the Tsunami which gave unceasing distress
The commemoration of the 30,000 victims killed by the Tsunami which devastated the coast lines of Sri Lanka is to be held country-wide, today.
The commemoration are to be held in the memorials established in Jaffna and Mulaitheevu Districts. Silent tributes will be paid all over the country at the exact time the Tsunami hit Sri Lanka at 9.25 – 9.27 today.
At a similar day in 2004 Indonesia was hit by an earth quake of 9.3 on Richter Scale creating the tsunami . 11 countries were affected by it.174,000 lost their lives and further 100,000 went missing.
In Sri Lanka, 30,957 people lost their lives and 5,637 persons went missing.
Mulaitheevu’s share in the catastrophe was 3,000 killed and 1,300 . Jaffna lost 2,640 killed and 540 missing. 10,436 were killed in Amparai District of Eastern Province.
The commemoration events are to be held at the Memorial at Uduththurai, at 9 a.m., at Manatkadu at 6 a.m. , at Mamunai at 7.00 a.m. and at Mulaitheevu Town at 9.00 am.
