Not a piece of land at Vadduvagal will be given to the Navy, decision at Mulaitheevu DCC Meeting

“Not even a piece of land shall be given to Navy from the people’s land on which Navy had established the Navy Camp ‘SLNS Gotabhaya’ in Vadduvagal.” , so said a decision taken in the District Coordinating Committee meeting of Mulaitheevu District yesterday. The meeting of the said committee was held yesterday and the above resolution tabled by an MPc was adopted unanimously.

The Navy camp, SLNS Gotabhaya is located on 617 acre land belonging to the people at Vadduvagal. Several attempts were made take over those lands for the Navy. However, all those attempts were foiled by the strong opposition of the people.

The survey Department had noticed that the surveying of the lands to be held on last Thursday. People engaged in a struggle calling for the abandonment of the surveying, in front of the Camp itself. Following the surveyor Department Official going into the Vadduvagal Navy camp by an alternative route, people blocked the road at Vadduvagal Bridge and demanded that they get out from the camp.

The people said their struggle will be given up only if an assurance is given in writing that the surveying will be given up and that the matter will be taken up in the DCC meeting. Such a letter with the signature of Karaithuraipattu was handed over to the people by the Additional District Secretary of Mulaitheevu and the people in turn abandoned the struggle.

A decision of not giving any land to Navy at the said area was taken at the DCC meeting held yesterday.
