Mini Cyclone in Periyaneelavanai – More than 400 houses damaged
More than 400 houses have been damaged fully or partly, in Periyaneelavanai in Batticaloa, coming under the Kalmunai Police area, by a Mini Cyclone that ravaged the area day before yesterday. In a context where continuous rains had been experienced in the East, strong winds that started prevailing from 8.45 p.m. in the area transformed into a mini cyclone and devastated the area.
The flats- hosing scheme provided for people affected by Tsunami are the ones damaged by the cyclone. Roofs of three flats had been blown off by the mini cyclone. Power supply was completely interrupted as the supply wires were damaged. Water supply was also interrupted.
People living in these dwellings left them and sought refuge in the houses of relatives. Routine life of this area was affected due to the cyclone ravaging for nearly two hours. Action has been taken by the Disaster Management Centre of Amparai and the Kalmunai Tamil Pradeshiya Sabai to provide assistance to the affected people.
