Mulaitheevu turned into a battlefield; Aqua Resources Department under siege; Riot squad massed

A massive demonstration was held jointly by thousands of fishermen and people demanding to stop illegal fishing.

A Demonstration Rally commenced from the Tsunami memorial, proceeded through the public market- Mulaitheevu town and then to Department of Fisheries and Aqua Resources. They raised slogans calling for the stoppage of illegal fishing.

They waited for a long time for the Deputy Director of the Department to meet them. They raged by no one coming to meet them, breached the police barriers, broke the fences and attacked the office. Several glass windows were smashed up and the boundary fences destroyed completely. Following the unrest, large number of Riot-Squad had been massed around the Office.

People have commenced a continuous struggle from sheds constructed in front of the Office.
