More than 21,000 could have been made to disappear: Saliya Pieris, Chairman OMP
The Chairman of the OMP, Saliya Pieris had said that more than 21,000 persons could had been made to disappear since 1983.
He told this while participating in the media conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday.
Not like the other Commissions established for the Missing Persons, the OMP will engage in finding out what had happened to the people made to disappear. 16,000 persons as per the data published by the Red Cross in 2016, more than 21,000 as per the data of the Paranagama Commission and as per the data received by the Ministry of National coordination and reconciliation, through the Grama Officers had been made to disappear in the past in Sri Lanka.
Although it could not be firmly said, at least 21,000 had been made to disappear in Sri Lanka, he said.
