President Dissolves Parliament  

Serious political crisis has developed in Colombo and the President has dissolved the Parliament through a special gazette yesterday. He has excluded in doing so, 19th amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits dissolving the Parliament before it completes at least 4 ½ years of its term.

Great confusions prevailed in Colombo Politics following regime change on 26th of last month.  Mahindha Rajapakse was appointed Prime Minister by President Maithri and then only Ranil was dismissed by him, in gross violation of constitution. While claims being made by both Ranil and Mahindha, Parliament had been dissolved aggravating the confusions already prevailing in Colombo. International countries were exerting much pressure to convene the Parliament.

In this context, President has dissolved the Parliament.

Nomination are scheduled for Nov.19 to Nov. 26.

Elections have been scheduled  5th January 2019

First sitting of the 9th Parliament is scheduled for January 17th.

Meanwhile the Commissioner of Elections, Mahindha Desapriya has announced that the elections will held only after consultation with Supreme Court.

The Indian Government has announced that it is watching intensively the developments in Sri Lanka.
