Threats from SL Navy – People of Silavathurai request protection from Human Rights Commission

Silavathurai people, who are engaged in a struggle outside the Silavathurai Navy Camp, had made a complaint yesterday with  the Human Rights Commission that, they are encountering threats from the SL Navy and other unidentified persons and the Navy men are photographing and videoing the protesters and had sought the protection of the Commission.

The SL Navy had established its camp on 36 acre land belonging to people of Silavathurai in Mannar, Musaly Divisional Secretary’s area.

As lands belonging to more than 218 families are found under the Navy, the people had commenced a struggle on last Wednesday, demanding to shift the Navy Camps elsewhere and release the lands to the people.

In this context the people engaged in the struggle had said that Navy men and unidentified persons are behaving in a threatening way and they are videoing all participants of the struggle and on advice from the Mannar Social and Economical Development Organization(MSEDO) had lodged a complaint with the sub-office of the HR Commission.

Further, the protesters had said that they will continue their struggle, come what may the threats.

It is notable that the people are continuing their struggle for the 4th day now.
