Fishermen Protest in Trincomalee

A protest rally was undertaken by the fishermen of Trincomalee yesterday.

The fishermen undertook the protest demanding to release the ‘Karaisaikkalappu’ in Kumpurupittiya, of Kutchchavelly Divisional Secretary’s Area of Trincomalee District.

These fisher had depended on the Karasai area for a long time for their livelihood.

However in the post war period the Government had given 1,800 acre in the area to a private Company for establishing a Saltern excluding all the protest of the fishermen.

More 1,000 fishermen are depending in the Kalappu for their livelihood. They were catching prawns, Crabs and fish from the kalappu. They say that 1,805 acre of people  had been given to the private company, denying their livelihood.

In this context, although the fishermen had demanded that the kalappu be released to them, no solution had been delivered to them.

However, in December last year the company promised to release 1,000 acre in response to the divisional Secretary’s request, but no area had been released to date.

In this context the people had commenced this struggle demanding the release of the said land.
