Elephants play havoc in Kili/Malayalapuram- Polythene with Sinhala letters in elephant  dung

Elephants entered in an unprecedented way into Malayalapuram in Kilinochchi and had damaged the agricultural productions, the area people said.The elephants which entered the area had damaged cash crops.

The affected people said that , after  finding the elephants had entered the village, they tried chase them away and the elephants in return had tried to attack the people and later with the help of the villagers they were able to chase away the elephants.

The elephants behaved like domesticated animals and like elephants which were familiar with people.

More than 100 trees had been damaged , including Coconut trees and Rubber trees, they said.

The people expressed suspicion that these elephants had been domesticated somewhere and later had been released in this area. They also said, there were polythene pieces with Sinhala letters and kiththul wastes in the elephant dung. They had been released here overnight said the people and requested that relevant officials should take appropriate action to safeguard them and their crops.

It is notable that Baticaloa farmers reported that elephants were brought in long vehicles and released into their areas and they are destroying their cultivation during last Maha Season. Observers said that this is a planned act destroy people and crops at the same time. The polythene with Sinhala letters and the Kiththul wastes in the Elephant dung indicate that the elephants had been brought from the South.
