Massive Search Operation in Jaffna University. President, Secretary of students’ union arrested

A massive search Operation was undertaken by the Army in the University of Jaffna Premises and in the Students’ Hostel. The President and the Secretary of the Students’ Union were arrested for possessing photographs of Liberation Tigers, and have been remanded.

The Students’ Union building and Hostels were subjected to intense searching. The Army had said that pictures of Leader of Liberation Tigers, Prabaharan were recovered from students Union building and from the hostels.

Students Union Leader M.Thiveharan and Secretary, S.Kapilraj were arrested and taken away for inquiries.

This search which commenced at 5.00 a.m. was carried out by 300 – 450 Army men accompanied by Armoured vehicles and military buses.

MPs, Sumanthiran and Mawai Senathyrasa visited and had discussion with Thivaharan and Kapilraj who have been detained in Kopay Police. While the Kopay Police has sent an application to Ministry of Defence seeking permission to investigate them under PTA and the army has submitted a letter that action be taken against them under PTA.

They were produced before Jaffna Magistrate Anthonysamy Peter Paul, who remanded them till 19th.
