“Annai Bhoopathy” commemoration in University of Jaffna
The 31st anniversary of “ Annai Bhoopathy ” who sacrificed her life in a fast unto death struggle against the Indian Peace Keeping Force was held yesterday in the Auditorium of the Student’s Federation.
The Secretary of the Federation, S.Babilraj delivered the Memorial Address. The President of the Arts Faculty Student Federation, E.Kirishanatha garlanded the Photograph of Annai Bhoopathy. Student Federatioin’s Treasurer, T.Gowritharan lighted the Memorial flame following which the students lighted other flames.
Kanapthypillai Bhoopathy , known to the whole world as Annai Bhoopathy is a native of Kiran in Baticaloa, was born on 1932 November 03rd. She had 10 children. two of them were taken away by the Army , never to be heard from again. One son joined LTTE in 1990 with the name Kannathasan. Others had got married.
Annai Bhoopathy played an important role in providing food and refuge to LTTE porazhis in Navatkudah, where she lived after her marriage.
Being an important member of Mothers’ Front , she took active part in all struggles undertaken by the Mothers’ Front against IPKF.
She undertook a fast unto death struggle against the IPKF on 1988 March 19 and in a context where the Indian Government not heeding to her demands, sacrificed her precious life one month later on 1988 April 19th.
Another commemoration was held at ‘Arivaham’, the TNA Office in Kilinochchi, yesterday, Friday at around 9.30 a.m.
