Attempt to smuggle out valuable Aloevera plants from Island Sector, Jaffna

Two traders from the south were arrested yesterday, accused of attempting to illegally smuggle out valuable Aloevera plants ( Kathalai in Tamil) from the Island Sector, in Jaffna.

The Kayts Police said that the southern traders were arrested at the Mandaitheevu junction at noon yesterday, Sunday.

Entering into Aloevera growing areas in Pungudutheevu, these two traders had stealthily plucked the plants and tried to smuggle them out.

Some vigilant youth had noticed this and had tried to stop the vehicle carrying the plant, but the vehicle had escaped from them and sped towards Jaffna. Information was immediately  given to the police and the smugglers were intercepted at Mandaitheevu junction and arrested. A police team from Kayts police station led by SI, Vivekanth had made this arrest.

The Police is taking further action to produce the suspects and to hand over the vehicle used by the smugglers to the Courts.
