Cremation of Viharathypathy between Muniuyappar Temple and Memorial tower – Strong opposition from Public Organizations

Public Organizations and people have protested strongly to cremating the former Thero in charge of Nagavihare Jaffna between the Muniyappar Temple and the memorial for people killed during the Tamil Research Conference. They have asked in writing, the CM and Th Jaffna Municipal Council to intervene and stop this outrage.

Tamil National Cultural Council stated that Cremating the Thero’s body in close proximity will hurt the feelings of Tamil people. Whenever Hindus are demised, their bodies will be cremated in crematoriums allocated for that. Cremations are not carried out in places where the people assemble or near Hindu Places of worship.

Muneeswaran Temple, revered by Hindus is located near the Jaffna Fort. The attempt to cremate the prelates body there will hurt the feelings of the Hindu people. Cremating it near memorial of the people killed during TR Conference is an act of desecration of the sacrifice of the people killed.

Although the area comes under Archaeological Department, the approval for the cremation had been given by Colombo.

However, hundreds of soldiers are busy in the preparations for the cremation.
