The medical services at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital cannot be suspended to release a specialist on transfer, said the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Jaffna, T.Sathiyamoorthy.

He said so in a media conference held yesterday at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Elaborating further he said, around 800 patients get treated in the OPD, around 1100 patients in the wards and 2600 patients in various clinics  per day. During any disaster in the North, JTH is the final destination for treatment.

A special unit has been established to treat those injured in road accidents. Anaesthetist serving currently is providing good services. He could be released on if a qualified specialist will take over his duties.

If the specialist is just released, the neuro unit has to closed resulting in the death of several persons daily. I have requested the Ministry to appoint a new medical officer. Some newspapers have distorted this situation in their news. There is no truth, he said.
