Discussion on Prefabricated houses for North postponed without giving reason by President

An important discussion that was to held on the 65,000 pre-Fabricated Houses to be built in the North by the Ministry of Resettlement scheduled to be held yesterday under the chairmanship of the President was cancelled at the last moment without prescribing a date or time and reason.

It had been planned by the Ministry of Re-Settlement to construct 65,000 Pre-fabricated Houses for North at a cost of 2.1 million each. This project was vehemently opposed by Tamil Politicians on the basis of excessive cost and non-suitability to the Northern Climate. The NPC had gone up to passing a resolution asking to re-view this housing scheme.

An urgent discussion on the Prefabricated houses was schedule to be held yesterday, presided by the President at his Official residence. The Chief Secretary and the District Secretary were invited to participate in it. In this context instructions had gone out at 4.00 p.m. that the discussion had been cancelled, from the President’s Secretariat. It had not been announced about why the meeting was cancelled nor when it will be held again.
