Drought scorching the Islands, people may be compelled to displace from there
As there is a drastic shortage of drinking water in the Islands, the people found themselves in pathetic situation of displacing to other areas, pointed out the Divisional Secretaries and requested that arrangements to supply drinking water for the people of the islands should be expedited.
A workshop on the experiences of desalination Sea water to drink water was held yesterday presided by the District Secretary Jaffna, N.Vethanayagan. Divisional Secretaries pointed out as above in a discussion regarding shortage of drinking water.
Within this month a situation of no drinking water will dawn on the Islands, and the water problem should be solved in whatever ways and means available, they said. The schemes that were drafted to supply water to the Islands had not been implemented. It is not known as to whom is blocking the schemes. If a suitable arrangement is not made soon, water will not be available in the Islands
We are trying to supply water, as much as possible. If the weather prevailing now continues without change, the people of the Islands will be compelled to displace to other areas, they further said.
The shortage of water has drastically affected the cattle. It was announced that the ponies in Delft are dying due to drought.
Urgent measures should be taken to alleviate the water shortage, they insisted.
