Evidences of ‘Torture Chamber’ in released houses destroyed in Weemankamam
The evidence showing that two adjacent houses in the recently released Vali-North area of Weemankamam being used as torture chambers by Military Intelligence(MI) were found destroyed by the army.
This particular area which was encompassed in the High Security Zone (HSZ) for more than 25 years was released for resettlement on December 29th.
When the people went there, on the first day, two adjacent houses bore marks of being used as torture chambers. Both houses had their top portions blocked by closely knitted barbed wire. One room was found to be made into isolation cell by nailing iron sheets to walls making it into a dark room.
In front of one room it was written “No admittance to all ranks” and on another room “ No admittance to out siders” and “ MI Room” which suggest that these houses had been used by the Military Intelligence unit. Another room contained Army uniforms.
Now somebody had removed the barbed wire, Sinhala letters obliterated by painting over them and the uniforms and army documents were found burned.
All evidence points out that these houses may have been used to torture whoever detained there.
It is notable that the Army Spokesman Jayanath Jeyaweera said a few days back that the Army has no need to operate concentration camps or torture camp.
