Fasting protesters against building vihare arrested in Kokkilai

Preparations are underway to construct a Buddhist vihare between the hospital and the sub post office at Kokkilai at a cost of several million rupees with the assistance of the Army.

Onbe of the owners of the said land Thirugnnasampanthar Manivannathas, journalist and social service activist  Yogathasan Jude Nimalan and Kathirkamu Sivalogeswaran, member of the Seruwila Pradeshiya Sabai and a social service enthusiast commenced a fasting protest demanding immediate stoppage of the construction of the Vihare, on Friday.

within 15 minutes Police were at the spot and arrested the fasters. They were taken to Mullaitheevu Police station. On hearing about the incident the NCP member, Dr.Sivamohan sped to the police station and the protesters were released after 3 hours, after Dr.Sivamohan  contacting the SP, Mullaitheevu.

Following the fast, hundreds of policemen were massed between Karunaddankerny  to Kokkilai. Tension prevailed in the area for some time.
