The first ever death sentence passed by Mannar High Court on a Heroine smuggler from Mannar

A Mannar resident who was arrested with heroine in his possession was sentenced to death yesterday by the Mannar High Court. Gnnatheepan Jesuthasan Roge (aged 50), from Nadukkudah, Thalaimannar, who was arrested when transporting 445 Kg. Heroine was sentenced yesterday. Roge was arrested on 2012.12.16., near St. Antnoy’s Church, Nadukkudah.

Police had a case charging Roge to be in possession of 445 Kg. Heroine. Police has said that they were in ambush following a tip-off, and a speeding vehicle suddenly stopped near the ambush and a green bag lowered to the ground and Roge emerged from a nearby bush and arrested while trying to remove the bag.

Although Roge pleaded not guilty and granted bail, his charges were proved and High Court Commissioner Mahintha Pihithiniya sentenced him to death.

Incidentally this is the first ever Death sentence passed by the Mannar high Court.
