Fishing declines in Kilinochchi District
The Fisheries Department information has shown that the Fishing in 2018 had fallen short of the fish harvest in 2017.
Following post-war resettlement, nearly 16,801 persons belonging to 4,113 families had taken up fishing for their livelihood.
However the amount of fishing harvest for 2018 had fallen below the 2017 figures.
The total amount of harvest in 2018 undertaking fishing as livelihood is 10,471 MT. But the harvest for 2017 was 11,664 MT. The shortfall amounts to around 200 MT.
It is notable that, although fishermen were allowed to fish in Iranaitheevu sea areas, in 2018, the shortfall had occurred.
