Governor confirm 67 feet Buddha statue to be erected in Nainatheevu

As soon as the approval of the Coastal Protection Department is received the work to erect the 67 feet Buddha statue at Nainatheevu will be commenced, said the Governor of the North Reginold Cooray.

He also said he had inspected the proposed site and is convinced that it will not hide the Nagapoosany Temple.

He was answering questions of Mediamen whether the proposed statue will hide the Temple.

Nainatheevu being a historical place of Tamil people and as  it is replete with ancient Hindu history, the erecting of such a massive Buddha statue in that location will obliterate the history of Hindhu Religion and Tamil people, some Tamil factions said.

They also said that in the context of the work on the statue is to be started soon, tamil people should raise their voice against the construction.
