Heavy Rain lashes North & No heavy damages reported: says the Disaster Management Centre
Following high temperatures prevailing in excess of 35ºC for more than one and a half months, heavy rains poured over the North from yesterday evening. The people who basked in the hot sun light for long were so relieved by the Rain. Although intermittent drizzles occurred once in a while, good showers blessed the North only from the evening of yesterday.
The areas of Puthkudiyirruppu, Mullaitheevu and Mulliyawalai are continuing to experience heavy rains, and flood waters have advanced into shops and homes and had caused certain damages. However neither large scale damage nor life losses are reported so far. Likewise, it is also reported that the districts of Kilinnochchi and Mannar are also experiencing heavy rains.
Meanwhile the National Met. Centre had announced that the whole country is experiencing heavy rains amounting to an average of 100 – 150 mm rain, 2 had lost their lives and 7,634 people belonging to 2,011 families were affected by floods Landslides and other calamities.
The depression prevailing over Batticaloa which is causing the heavy rains is expected to move towards India today. Heavy rains with strong winds are expected today, said the Met Station.
