Indian Army Officers pay homage at Kopay yesterday

A team of Indian Army Officers including Commanding Officer of the Southern Army Command, Lieut. Gen. B.M.Haris visited North yesterday and paid their homage at the memorial for the Indian Soldiers and visited several other places of interest.

This memorial which remained abandoned for 30 years was cleaned suddenly by the Sri Lanka Army. During the year 1987, Capt. Pathwal who was the officer commanding of the camp in Kopay/ Pirayady area was killed in a confrontation with the LTTE. A tomb was constructed in his memory in the above said place. Following the exit of IPKF, this memorial was in a state of abandonment up to last week.

This memorial was cleared up on request of Lieut. Gen. B.M.Haris, who had served along with the above Officer killed here in 1987.

In this context the said officer Lieut. Gen. B.M.Haris came with commander Haresin, commander V.K.Singh, other officers and several Sri Lankan Army Officials visited the site yesterday 19th and paid homage to the dead officer and then visited Jaffna Fort, Palaly Army Camp and other locations where the LTTE had attacked the IPKF.

Heavy Army security was provided to the visiting officers and the venues they visited.

It is notable that, although, permission was refused to the media to cover the events, later they were allowed to cover the events, and that the tomb is located in a land owned by a private person.
