In a Tamil village Ootukkulam in Vavuniya, jungle had been destroyed to place a Buddha statue. The Statue had been brought from the South and activities are being undertaken to create a Sinhala Colony around the Statue.
The area people have said that a Buddha statue had been placed in an area after clearing jungle there and huts had been constructed around the statue, presuimably to colonize Sinhalese people.
In this context the Chairman and members of Nedunkerni PS visited the spot and made observations.
Commenting on the matter the Chairman said that Ootupulam in Nedunkerny DS division in an ancient Tamil village. After displacement, although the people had not resettled yet, they are undertaking agriculture there.
Jungle had been destroyed in the deep forest and a Vihare had been established there and sheds for establishing a colony there are being in construction. A Bhikku with two guards seems to be residing there. Without the Forest Department paying any attention, forest is being freely destroyed to make way for settlements.
The Tamil MPs and responsible persons should take proper action to prevent colonization like this, he said.
