Justice should be delivered for assassinated and missing journalist – Attention drawing demonstration in Batticaloa yesterday
The 11th year commemoration of the assassinated journalist Sugirtharajan was held yesterday in front of the Batticaloa Clock Tower.
The attention drawing protest was undertaken during this event. The event was held under the aegis of Eastern Province Press Council.
Several people participated in this event including the TNA MPs Gna. Srinesan and Viyalendran and Provincial Minister K.Thurairajasingam.
Sugirtharajana native of Kurumanvelly, Batticaloa, was assassinated by un-identified persons on 24th January 2006, at Trincomalee where he was staying at that time for his official purpose. He was the serving as the Trincomalee Reporter for the Uthayan – Sudar Oli newspapars.
He was behind the revelation of the murder of 5 students in Trincomalee, and he was targeted due to this. The police officers then tried to divert attention on the murder of the students saying they were killed by explosion of a hand bomb they were carrying. But Sugirtharajan bravely acted and photographed minutely the bodies of the students to prove that the students were shot dead from close range in the heads and the wounds on their head had not been caused by grenade splinters.
Sugirtharajan’s report created International pressure on the government and his news was inducted into the investigation of the UN.
Speakers in the event said that this caused Sugirtharajan’s Assassination.
