Lack of trust on Police and courts …..the reason for violence in Jaffna: Prof. Daya Somasekaram
Lack of trust or hate on the police and courts may be reason for the violence that occurred during the protest against the pervasive gang rape and murder of the Pungudutheevu student, said the Psychological specialist of the Jaffna University, Professor Daya Somasundaram. We can also see this as the consequence of the long oppression the people were subjected to, he said. They have exploded because of that.
“ There is no hope about the future in the youths. No attention was paid to this after the war. Anti-social activities always happen. But, to go to this extent, the frustration in their mind is the cause. The approach among the public and police are not in order.
“Lack of healthy recreation, people not being properly directed and the lack of leadership qualities may also be the reasons. We have to build up the internal structure of the society. The traditional social relationships, communications, trusts should built up. The judicial sector and the police sector are not seemed to be healthy.
“Although the police performing their duties as much as possible, it leaves much to be desired. The way they treat the people and the youth and the way they conduct themselves shows that, there are inadequacies in their approaches. The mentality of the police should be c hanged.
“ Before the regime change the north was much militarized. After the regime change, people are able to breath little freely. But those pent up furies will invariably burst into the open at some time. I think that considerable number of youths did just that, although I do not justify them. Overall, the youth should move towards constructive activities.
