Land grabbing attempt defeated in Vankalai
The Navy yesterday undertook an attempt on Monday to survey lands belonging to private people along the beach of Vankalai village, , in order to acquire that land. But this attempt was defeated by the strong opposition of the public.
Navy was in occupation of a private land in extent of 1 acre, for more than 5 years. The Navy is pressurizing the owners to give them the land permanently for Rs.2,200,000/=.
However the people who do not like to sell their land are demanding Navy that the land be given back to them. Last week the Navy tried to survey the land without the consent of the owners, but the attempt was defeated by the people.
Yesterday the Navy tried to survey the land by force. The people complained to MP, Charles Nirmalanathan. The matter was taken to the attention of Mannar Government Agent M.Y.S.desapriya and and Nanattan Divisional Secretary, S.Paramathas. The Divisional joined the people and stopped the surveying, said a fisherman who took part in the protest
