Large ship sunk in WW II recovered at Trincomalee

A British freighter sunk during World War II had been brought to the surface after 75 years with much struggle, said the Sri Lanka Navy yesterday.

The  SS Sagaing , commissioned on 1924.12.24, was sunk by Japanese bombers on 1942.4. 09,  while being anchored at Trincomalee Habour.

It was discovered that this ship is lying at a depth of 35 feet.

After several months of struggle, the ship was brought to the surface with the assistance on Sri Lanka Navy divers.

The task of bringing the ship to the surface was undertaken under the direction of  Captain Kirishantha Athukorale of the Sri Lanka Navy by a team of 98 divers of the Sri Lanka Navy.

It is notable that this task was commenced on 2017.09.11.
