Maithri disregards UN proposals in extending the term of Paranavithana Commission

President Maithripala Sirisena had disregarded UNHRC Commissioner’s recommendation within one week of his visit, by extending the term of office of Maxwell Paranagama Commission, by three months. During his visit the commissioner had recommended to dissolve the said commission, and the President gave an assuarance that the recommendations of the UNHRC will be implemented.

The Maxwell Commission was appointed by former President Mahindha Rajapakse, to inquire on Missing persons on 2013 August 15th.  Earlier extensions were made every six months and the Commission went directly to all the districts of North and East and received around 19,000 complaints.

The term of Office of the Commission came to its end on 15th, Monday. However, Maxwell Paranagama had said that the 3 months extension is not enough.
