Mannar suspect well exhumation commenced yesterday

The suspect well by the side of the mass grave at Thiruketheeswaram was exhumed yesterday before the Mannar Magistrate Alex Rajah. 2 small skeletons were recovered in the initial exhumation and were sent to Colombo for determination whether they were human or otherwise. The exhumation was to be continued today.

During a  routine road widening work in Thiruketheeswaram, a mass grave was detected accidentally. The mass exhumed under orders and direction of the Mannar Court. More than 80 human remain including skulls and skeletons were recovered from the mass grave.

Suspicions were raised by people about a well nearby being also a mass grave. Following motions by Attorneys of Mannar  court the Judge ordered the exhumation.
Prior to the exhumation the STF cleared the area for land mines. Attorneys S.Niranjan and Ranitha Gnnarajah appeared for the affected. Mannar District Special Judicial Medical Official W.R.S.rajapakse and other summoned officials were present during the excavation.
