Maveerar Week Commences today
The “Maveerar week”, commemorating members of the LTTE who have laid down their lives for the betterment of Tamil people commences today 21st and will be continued till 27th. The commemorations will be held peacefully, all over the Tamil home land. In a context where, the Government has not banned any commemoration, it is reported that people could participate in them without any hesitation.
The Year was 1982. A house in Navalar road was surrounded by Sri Lankan Army. They had done so on information that casualties of LTTE in the attack on Chavakacheri were being treated there. One young man, who was in the house, jumps over the wall of the house and ran shooting with the pistol he had towards the Army. Army bullets fly towards the young man. One bullet hit him in his abdomen. Bleeding severely he runs about, 2miles and reach his comrades. He hands over the weapon to his friends and drops unconscious. One week passes before he was taken out of the siege and to Tamil Nadu. He was conscious until he meets and speaks to his leader Velupillai Prabaharan. With his leader and comrades standing with flowing eyes he embraces the glory of being the first Maveerar of the LTTE on 27.11.1982 at 6.05 p.m.
The sacrificial flame is lighted in the years followed exactly at this day and time in memory of 2nd Lt.Sankar alias Sathiyanathan. The Maveerar week in memory of 2nd Lt. Sankar and other Maveerars who followed on his trail, commences today.
During war times this day was celebrated on a grand scale in ” Maveerar Thuyilumillams” presided by LTTE Leader, Velupillai Prabaharan. After war, in a context where the Maveerar Thuyillumillams being desecrated and occupied by the Sri Lankan Army, and not released completely, the former government also banned commemorating the Maveerars. Although, the new government did not ban commemoration, the organizers of commemorations had to face threats.
The Commemoration this year will be held at Nallur on a grand scale and the students of University of Jaffna, had also announced that they will remember the Maveerars.
It is notable that the TNA and TNPF had put out calls for all the Tamils to get together and celebrate the Maveerar memories, which will be the gratitude and honour the Maveerars who had laid their precious lives for us.
