May Day Rallies – An arena for testing strengths of Political Parties
Popular political Parties and Trade Unions held more than 20 May Day Processions and Meetings all around the country, yesterday.
The SLFP in the alliance Government led by President Maithripala Sirisena held its May Day at Galle. The UNP led by Ranil Wickremasinghe held its May Day Rally in Colombo.
Meanwhile, Joint Opposition partiies supporting Mahindha Rajapakse held a separate May Day rally against the Government.
Disregarding the ban by the SLFP leadership, SLFP members including Mahindha Rajapakse had attended this May Daymeeting of Joint Opposition.
Former President Mahindha Rajapakse had said that he took part in the meeting on behalf of the SLFPers in the Joint Opposition. Rajapakse announced here that he will carry on the struggle against the Government.
President Maithripala Sirisena who took part in the SLFP rally in Galle, said that, the Party should be cleaned to win in election.
Notable amounts of supporters participated in these two meetings which were held one against the other.
In the May Day rally of the JVP held in Colombo its Leader Anura Kumara Diaissanayake said that the Tamil people are still undergoing several tribulations.
Parties and unions held separate May Day Meetings in the Hill Country.
Illankai Thamil Arasuk Kadchchi and TPNF held their processions and Rallies in the North.
Criticisms had been put forward that in recent times a trend had been created where instead of giving precedence to worker’s Rights, the political parties are using the May Day to demonstrate their political strengths.
