Muhamalai is a challenging area with regard to demining

It is reported that that the Muhamalai Area in KIlinochchi is seems to be a challenging area as far as removal of Unexploded Ordinance.

The task of removing UXO buried during the War period from Muhamalai area in Kilinochchi have been undertaken as from 2010.

The Demining organization has announced that the area where removal of UXOs has become a dangerous and challenging.

Currently demining work is being pursued in Ithavil, Muhamalai, and Vempodukerny grama Officer Divisions in Kilinochchi, Pachchilaippalli DS division.

Numerous UXO are found buried in the Muhamalai area in a dangerous and in a state of getting activated even after a long time. Several de-miners had been killed and injured because of this, the Organization said.

Large number of UXOs is found in abandoned FDLs and sentry posts.

Hence, the Divisional Secretary and De-mining Organization have requested the public not to enter these areas.

This area is very challenging to de-miners who have a long term experiences in de-mining, said the De-mining organization carrying out Demining operations in this area.
