People’s struggle demanding resettlement in Vali –North
The people’s struggle demanding re-settlement in Palaly – Myliddy areas was held today in Nallur. The Vali-North resettlement and Rehabilitation Society had organised this protest rally and demonstration.
Thousands of people took part in this Rally and Demonstration. Political Parties and public organizations had pledged their full support for this Rally and Demonstration.
“The dead-line offered by the President had expired. High level Political leaders are seem to be opening their mouty with regard to Myliddy – Palaly resettlement. We must go to our own lands. We ourselves had to struggle for that. That is why we have organized this massive struggle today.” said the President of the Vali North and Myliddy Resettlement Societies, A.Gunapalasingam.
The people marched near Nallur Temple and held a peaceful demonstration from 9.00 to 10.00a.m. Thereafter they proceeded to UNHCR office, and a memorandum for UN washanded over. The people of Vali-North were displaced in 1990 and although resettlement was allowed in some parts, people were not allowed to resettle in 23 GS divisions. A total 30,000 people of 9,000 families, including 971 families in Welfare Centres and the rest living with friends and relatives are yet to be resettled.
Following the promise of the President, to resettle them in their own lands within 6 months, the people temporarily postponed their struggle. However as the dead line of the President had expired people are resuming their struggle today.
