Rare species exclusive to Sri Lanka found in Vavuniya

A unique species with the biological name of Thasia Halianus exclusively belonging to Sri Lanka has been found in Vanni Jungle. This species which mostly live on trees have been found in the jungles of Omanthai in Vavuniya.

Although this species was thought to be living in western mountain range, recent classifications have determined that this particular species is exclusively belongs to Sri Lanka.

This unique species around 8cm. long is different from all its brother species. It has a few lines (22 – 24)  and extended spine scales along its body.

It is notable that due its uniqueness , it has been depicted in the Rs.2/= note issued by Central Bank in 1970.
